I had to remove and reinstall the night switch and the music box lever onto the new movement and they look just like this pic now. Oct 19, 48, 2, North Carolina Country Region. One thing - be sure the pendulum is not touched by either the lift levers or the wires when it's striking. Also the ticking needs to be nice and even. Tinker Dwight Registered User.
Oct 11, 13, 81 0 Calif. OK I attempted to set the beat on this new movement but I am having a problem. When I move the pendulum manually my tick is almost 20 deg to the left looking at the rear of the movement almost to the edge of the body slot but the tock is right at the vertical.
To keep it ticking I have to elevate the right side of the clock body 1. So just how far and which way do I bend the pendulum wires in the rear of the movement and exactly which wire do I bend? The long wire that the wooden pendulum hangs from or the wire with the small crook that the pendulum wire hangs through and which runs into the movement the crutch? I attached 2 pics of the new movement installed in the clock body. The new movement is mounted in the same holes that the old movement was screwed into.
I don't think I could rotate the new movement inside the clock body without replacing the small wooden pads it is mounted to or removing the face and trying to recenter the movement. I would need to move it at least a screw width to get good wood for the attachment screws to get a good hold. Last edited: Jun 29, Looking at your pictures, there is a bend at the top of the pendulum wire.
Straighten that and see where that takes you. After straightening the pendulum wire, it is the crutch wire that you bend to set the beat. Use care when bending. If you bend it by just taking the bottom and pushing, you are likely to break the joint where it connects to the anchors arbor.
Use some type of pliers to bend it near where it exits the rear plate. As for which way to bend, tilt the clock until it runs. You bend it up towards the end that is lifted.
Tinker Dwight. OK I straightened the pendulum wire which did little but I did bend the crutch wire and that seems to have fixed it. At least it is still ticking after several minutes. Now to get the cuckoo to work correctly. It still seems to want to just cuckoo until the weight hits the floor. Now that the clock parts is working Hopefully the rest will as well. Well so far so good.
The clock seems to be keeping time relatively accurately and it correctly cuckoos to various hours correctly. However now the bird doesn't want to retract all the way. I can flip the levers on the side of the movement to allow it to spring back but apparently its not doing that automatically.
OH well that is enough for today. Minor progress. Thanks to everyone's help. I will get it working eventually. Regula 25 Cuckoo action Questions Can anyone describe for me how the cuckoo rod gets activated and released at the hours and half hours.
I finally got this new movement on the beat so it keeps time but the cuckoo is sort of messed up. It starts at the right times and the rod pivots to expose the bird but it does not retract when finished. And at times I can make it start cuckooing and it doesn't stop until the weight hits the floor or I raise the night switch. Also a question on the night switch that attaches to the upper right rear corner under that nut. Does anything but friction hold that level up in its off position or is there a spring.
When I took the level off my old movement I did transfer the small spacer and washer and I think I got everything oriented correctly. However on this new movement the lever will not stay up very long and will eventually slide back down to the activate position and let the cuckoo go off. If there are any online drawings or articles on how this movement functions I would appreciate some links. I will also keep searching this forum. MARK A. Jul 4, 2, 63 Muscatine, Iowa Country Region.
Re: Regula 25 Cuckoo action Questions If you got a new unit to replace an identical old one, transfer the wire bird, gong hammer, and bellows lifters from the old unit to the new one. Most problems arise from the bird wire not being adjusted properly. If you transfer then no adjustment is needed. Re: Regula 25 Cuckoo action Questions Looking at the movement from the front, study the mechanisms to the right of the center arbor.
That's where the shut off occurs. As you study how it works you will probably see why it is not. Otherwise some pictures would help us. There is a retracting spring wrapped around the bottom of the bird perch bar.
Be sure that has not come loose. I have merged the two threads on the same clock. It may confuse the posts a bit note the title of the posts , but will keep all of the information on the same clock in the same thread, which is helpful.
So just how do i transfer the old bird rod to the new movement. I thought about doing that but could not easily see how to remove the old rod so I decided to bend the new rod to match.
The clock appears to activate the rod correctly but when those levers on the bird rod side should release so the spring will return it, those levers are not releasing. It would be easier to work on with out the roof. Should that be easy to remove without wood damage? Any suggestions on doing that? You should work on it outside of the case. It is not easy to remove the top. The problem with the bird returning may be the same problem that causes it to run on.
Ok that settles it I will remove I from the body until I get it worked out. One last comment before I remove the movement from the clock body. I ran the clock for about 6 hours yesterday from PM to midnight. It keep pretty good time within a minute or two during that time frame. The cuckoo struck all the hours just fine with the right number of cuckoos, the bird retracted and closed the door maybe half the time. However the half hour strikes were strange.
Sometimes it would have just one cuckoo but others it might have 2,3 or 4 cuckoos. I believe that the door closed most of the times at the half hour strikes. So are there any suggestions on what I should focus on after I remove the movement?
Check the timing of that warning pin detent and the gathering pallet's cam. I have the German parts diagram so can you tell me the part no for that pin detent and the gathering pallet cam so I will know what I am looking for. I do not have any idea what the number is. Do a search for terminology and there is a page on this MB with pictures of these pieces. I have not had the chance to remove the new movement from the clock yet so I ran it again yesterday for around 6 hours.
It kept time very well and all the cuckoo calls occurred on the hour and half hour as expected. The number of calls was correct for each hour up until the midnight strike. Then the clock cuckooed 12 times, hesitated for just a fraction of a second and then cuckooed 3 more times before stopping. The bird did not retract but it did retract for most of the other hours but it did not retract for the one call half hours.
This thing is just weird. Also it seems that the cuckoos are petty fast. The cuckoo call weight drops almost to the floor in just 6 hours. Is that normal for a 1 day clock? If the strike is very rapid, the stop may not be able to activate. It appears that you have a run-on strike occurring randomly. I ran it again yesterday for around 6 hours. It kept time very well and all the cuckoo calls occurred on the hour and half hour as expected I got the movement removed and re installed on my crude test stand.
Its ticking and keeping time and has struck a half hour already. I could see the bird post move in and then back out and watched the bellows rods move as well.
So far so good. Here are some pics of my test stand. That first strike might have been a strike. Perhaps I missed a single half hour strike. Not real sure what is happening now as it appears that the clock only strikes once every 30 minutes.
Maybe I am missing something but it worked better in the clock body than on my stand. I don't see anything binding and it is still keeping time pretty well. Can you post a picture of the rack and gathering pallet area.
Here are a few pics of the movement. Hopefully I captured the areas you requested. These cover the bird rod side of the movement. Here are a few more pics of the movement covering the side opposite the bird rod and the star wheel on the back. I posted a short video of the movement striking at on youtube. It looks like the bird rod is behaving so it must be hanging up on the clock body.
While I am testing the movement I have another question for the forum. The gear and rod appear to be the same as what is used to drive the dancer table with just a shorter rod.
My old one was slightly bent and when i tried to straighten it it just snapped in. It looks like the rod was scored metal cutter dykes? I have not tried to remove the gear from the rod so I am not sure if it is just a press fit or if it is glued or soldered.
