What are the characteristics of temperate deciduous forest? The temperate deciduous forest is a biome that is always changing.

It has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. Winters are cold and summers are warm. Temperate deciduous forests get between 30 and 60 inches of precipitation a year. What is in a deciduous forest? Deciduous trees are very dependent on water. A forest that is dominated by trees that lose their leaves in the fall is called a deciduous forest.

Wyoming deciduous tree species include aspen, cottonwood, box elder, ash, mountain ash, poplars, willows, fruit trees such as the wild plum and less commonly oak and maple. Where are temperate deciduous forest? Deciduous forests are broken up into five zones. The firstzone is the tree stratum zone. Temperate forests are characterized as regions with high levels of precipitation, humidity, and a variety of deciduous trees.

Deciduous trees are trees that lose their leaves in winter. Decreasing temperatures and shortened daylight hours in fall mean decreased photosynthesis for plants. Deciduous forests have a great variety of plant species.

Most have three levels of plants. The forest floor is usually inhabited by lichen, moss, ferns, wildflowers, and other small plants. Animals in temperate deciduous forests have to adapt to changing seasons. Shrubs include mountain laurel, huckleberries, and many others. The fourth zone is the herb zone, and contains short herbal plants, like ferns. The Ground zone is the final zone where plants grow directly near the ground. Some plants that grow here are lichens and mosses.

Throughout the year, rays from the sun hit different parts of the world more directly than others, causing varying temperatures, or seasons. If the Earth were not tilted on an axis, temperatures around the globe would always be the same. Temperate deciduous forests also have quite a wet environment.

Following rainforests, temperate deciduous forests are the second-rainiest biome. The average yearly precipitation is 30 - 60 inches 75 - cm. This precipitation falls throughout the year, but in the winter it falls as snow.

Deciduous trees are trees with leaves rather than pine needles, and they dominate temperate forests. As the seasons change each year, so do the leaves. Each year deciduous trees lose their leaves, and grow them back.

In the summer their broad green leaves capture sunlight and help the trees make food through photosynthesis.
